A lot of rooftop tents use a similar basic system. You have mounting rails on the underside of the tent, bolts that slide or drop into those rails, and brackets or plates that clamp around the roof bars. On paper, that sounds standard. In real use, small differences matter. One brand may use narrower channels, another may require longer bolts, and another may have a different rail position that affects how the tent sits on the vehicle.
This is why people often confuse “common design” with “universal fit”. The design principle is common. The actual hardware fit is not always.
What usually changes from one tent to another
The first variable is the rail system under the tent. Some roof tents have extrusion rails that accept sliding square nuts or channel nuts. Others use fixed holes or a different slot size. Even if two tents look similar from the outside, the hardware underneath may not be.
The second variable is bolt size and thread. Metric sizes can differ, and even a small change means a bolt either will not fit or will feel like it fits until the thread binds. That is not something to guess with. Cross-threading mounting hardware on a roof tent is a fast way to create a much bigger problem.
The third variable is the bracket itself. Roof bars come in different shapes and depths. Some are square. Some are aero. Some sit close to the roof. Others have more clearance. A U-bolt or clamp plate that works perfectly on one bar may be unusable on another because there is not enough space to get the hardware around the bar and tighten it properly.
Then there is load distribution. A fixing kit may physically attach the tent, but that does not automatically mean it is the right kit. If the bracket plate is too small, poorly shaped or not seated correctly against the rail and bar, the load path is not ideal. That matters once you are driving at speed, dealing with side winds or heading down rough tracks.
Why “universal” kits can still be the wrong choice
A universal fixing kit is usually designed to cover a range of setups rather than fit one setup perfectly. That can be useful if your existing hardware is missing or if you need a flexible replacement. But there is a trade-off.
The more a kit tries to fit everything, the more likely it is to rely on compromise - extra-long bolts, generic brackets, spacer stacks, or plates that only partially suit the rail profile. Sometimes that is acceptable. Sometimes it creates awkward fitting, exposed thread, limited adjustment or weaker anti-theft options.
If security matters, and for most roof tent owners it should, generic hardware often falls short. Standard nuts and bolts are easy to remove with basic tools. So even if a universal kit gets the tent mounted, it may not give you the level of theft resistance you actually want on a vehicle-mounted tent.
When fixings are compatible enough to use
There are plenty of cases where fixings do cross over successfully. Many roof tents share similar base rail layouts, and many aftermarket kits are made around the most common channel sizes and roof bar types. If the rail accepts the same bolt head or channel nut, the bracket spans the bar correctly, and the clamp hardware tightens cleanly without strain, then a non-original kit can be a perfectly sensible option.
Replacement fitting kits are also common where the original hardware has been lost, corroded or damaged. That is especially relevant for owners buying second-hand roof tents. A used tent may be great value, but the included hardware is often incomplete, mismatched or simply not what left the factory with it.
That said, compatibility should be checked, not assumed. You want measurements, not guesswork.
How to check whether your fixings will work
Start with the underside of the tent. Measure the rail width, the slot opening, and the spacing between the rails. Then check what type of bar the tent is mounting to - square, round or aero - and how much clearance exists beneath the bar.
Next, check the bolt specification. You need the right length, thread and head type for the rail or channel nut system. Too short and it will not engage properly. Too long and you may bottom out the thread or leave unnecessary exposed hardware.
After that, look at the clamping hardware as a whole. The bracket should sit flat, pull evenly and allow the tent to be positioned correctly on the bars. If the hardware is twisted, forced into place or only catching a few threads when tightened, it is not the right setup.
A good test is whether the system goes together cleanly without improvisation. If you are adding random washers, bending brackets or using mixed nuts from a toolbox to “make it work”, stop there. Roof tent mounting is not the place for a temporary fix that becomes permanent.
Security hardware adds another layer
Security fixings make things slightly more specific again. Anti-theft nuts, locking systems and tamper-resistant hardware need to match the existing bolt and bracket setup properly. You cannot always swap standard nuts for security nuts unless the thread, access and clearance all line up.
This is where roof tent owners often run into trouble. They buy a tent, fit it with the supplied hardware, then later decide to improve security. At that point, the best solution depends on the exact mounting system already in use. Brand differences matter more than people think

Some include low-profile hardware to keep the tent close to the roofline. Others prioritise simplicity over neatness.
Tent design matters too. A soft shell tent, a hard shell tent and a compact clamshell may all use different mounting positions or hardware clearances. Even within one brand, one model may not use exactly the same fixings as another generation of the same product.
That is why “it fitted my mate’s roof tent” is not useful evidence. Similar-looking setups can have different rail channels underneath, and that small difference is all it takes.
So what should you buy?
If your original fixings are present and in good condition, they are usually the best starting point. They were supplied for that tent and should match the rail design. If you need better theft protection, look for security hardware designed to work with that specific mounting style rather than replacing the entire system blindly.
If your fixings are missing or damaged, buy by measurement and compatibility, not by broad claims. Check the tent base, the roof bars and the hardware specification together. If a supplier can tell you exactly which models and rail types a kit fits, that is far more useful than “universal” on a product title.
