A rooftop tent can weigh well over 50kg before bedding, ladders and real-world use are factored in. Knowing how to attach rooftop tent fixing brackets properly is not a cosmetic job or something to rush through on the driveway. The brackets are the connection between a valuable tent, your roof bars and the vehicle beneath it. Get that connection right and the tent stays stable, secure and ready for the miles ahead.

Start with the roof, bars and load limits

Before opening the fixing kit, confirm that your vehicle and roof bar setup are rated to carry the tent. There are two figures people often confuse: dynamic roof load and static roof load.

Dynamic load is the weight your vehicle roof can safely carry while driving. It must cover the rooftop tent, roof bars, brackets and any equipment left inside the tent. Static load is what the roof can support while parked, which is normally much higher and accounts for people sleeping in the tent. Never assume a high static figure makes an overloaded driving setup acceptable.

Your bars must also be compatible with the tent’s mounting channels and wide enough apart for the manufacturer’s specified bar spread. A tent fitted to bars that are too close together can flex, move or place unnecessary strain on the shell and rails. Check the bar manufacturer’s individual bar rating too, rather than relying only on a pair rating.

If you have factory roof rails, remember that rails alone are not normally the mounting surface for a rooftop tent. You need correctly rated crossbars or a vehicle-specific rack system. Lightweight bars intended for a roof box or bike carrier are not automatically suitable.

Check the fixing kit before lifting the tent

Most rooftop tents use aluminium mounting rails on the underside of the base. Bolts slide into these rails, pass around or through the roof bars with fixing brackets, then secure with washers and nuts. The principle is simple, but the details matter.

Lay out every component before the tent goes onto the vehicle. You should have the correct number of rail bolts, brackets, washers and nuts for the tent. A four-point fixing arrangement is common, with two fixings around each roof bar, but follow the instructions supplied with your particular tent.

Inspect the mounting rails for cracks, damage, bent sections or bolts that no longer slide smoothly. Check the brackets for distortion and make sure the thread length is suitable once it passes through the bracket and washer. Do not substitute random hardware from a toolbox just because it appears to fit. The strength, thread pitch, corrosion resistance and profile of the components all affect the installation.

It is also worth cleaning the top of the roof bars. Grit trapped between a bar and the tent base can mark surfaces, prevent a square fit and make later inspections harder.

Position the tent before tightening anything

A rooftop tent is awkward, heavy and easily scratched. Use enough people to lift it safely, or arrange professional fitting if lifting capacity or access is a concern. Do not try to drag the tent across the bars alone.

Set the tent down centrally across both roof bars with the opening side facing the intended direction. On many vehicles, the practical choice is for the ladder to deploy towards the passenger side, away from passing traffic when parked roadside. That depends on the tent model, vehicle shape and how you use it, so check that the opened tent, ladder and rear hatch will all clear the vehicle.

Measure the overhang on both sides instead of judging it by eye. The tent should sit square to the vehicle and its weight should be shared evenly between the two bars. A slightly off-centre tent may not be immediately obvious on the road, but it can affect clearance, wind noise and how the vehicle feels in crosswinds.

Only when the tent is in its final position should you slide the bolts into the underside rails. Position each bolt close to the relevant roof bar, then bring the brackets up around the bar as designed. Keep all fixings loose enough to make small adjustments until every bracket is engaged correctly.

How to attach rooftop tent fixing brackets correctly

With the bolts sitting in the mounting channels, place each bracket so it grips the roof bar evenly. The bracket should sit flat and square, not twisted, perched on an edge or forced around a bar profile it was not designed to fit.

Fit the washers and nuts by hand first. This lets you confirm that the threads engage cleanly and prevents cross-threading. Once all four mounting points are assembled, tighten them gradually in sequence. Work from one side to the other and front to rear, adding a little tension at each point rather than fully tightening one bracket before touching the rest.

The aim is an even, firm clamp that prevents movement without crushing rails, deforming brackets or damaging roof bars. There is no universal torque figure for every rooftop tent and rack combination. Use the torque specification supplied by the tent or rack manufacturer where one is given. If no figure is provided, do not guess with a long-handled ratchet or impact gun. Tighten by hand with suitable tools, check that the tent cannot shift, then inspect again after the first journey.

Once tightened, try to move the tent from each corner. There should be no sliding on the bars, rocking at a mounting point or visible gap between bracket and bar. A tiny amount of normal vehicle suspension movement is not the same as a tent moving on its fixings.

Do not treat security nuts as an afterthought

Standard nuts make removal straightforward for an owner, but they also make a rooftop tent easier to target. A tent is visible, expensive and often left on a vehicle outside the house, at a trailhead or on a campsite. Replacing standard nuts with purpose-made tamperproof security nuts is a practical deterrent once the fitting position has been confirmed.

Security hardware should match the thread and bracket arrangement used by the tent. It must still allow the brackets to clamp properly and should not be used to compensate for damaged or poorly fitted standard parts. Keep the matching removal tool somewhere safe but accessible. Leaving it in the vehicle is convenient, but it also defeats part of the purpose if the vehicle is broken into.

Recheck the installation after driving

The first check should happen after a short drive, ideally before setting off on a longer trip. Stop somewhere safe, open the tent if practical, and inspect every bracket, nut and mounting rail. New installations can settle slightly as surfaces bed together.

After that, check the fixings before every major journey and after rough tracks, potholes, high winds or a period of not using the vehicle. Look for loose nuts, shiny wear marks where the tent has shifted, corrosion, cracked rails and damaged roof bar feet. If a bracket has moved, do not simply tighten it harder. Remove the load from the system where possible, identify why it moved and refit it correctly.

Pay attention to changes in driving feel too. Extra wind noise is normal with a rooftop tent, but sudden new rattling, knocking or vibration deserves an immediate inspection. The same applies if you notice a change after opening and closing the tent, as bedding or stored equipment may have shifted inside.

Professional fitting is useful when the tent is new, the vehicle has an unfamiliar rack system, or the tent needs lifting onto a tall SUV, pickup or van. It is also a good call if you are unsure whether the rails, bars and fixing kit are genuinely compatible.
